40. The 1% are the targets and not the servants, the politicians

When you only want to change reasonable small decisions you could put pressure on politicians.
Politicians are hardly important when you want to change big decisions as the growing inequality Politicians do not listen to the people, they just serve the 1%, the leaders in the background.
To get another society in which all people have the same status you must start to put pressure on the highest power in the country, the 1%.
That does not happen. The 1% continue to get more and more money and power.
In the last fifty years I have hardly seen actions against the 1%. They continue to take decisions that increase their power and money. They continue to strengthen their own part of the world. They continue to plunder the Third World. They continue to carry out wars in which only poor people are killed.

The past town guerrilleros of the last century only putted pressure on politicians. They expected to get some change by increasing this pressure for example by killing some high placed servants. The Italian Red Brigades concluded much later that killing some high-placed servants of the 1% as prime-minister Aldo Moro did not succeed in getting another kind of society. The highest power had remained untouched.

Not the executive power or the judicature are the most important power instruments in a democracy but the legislative power and the groups in silent backrooms that determine the general line for each country. That includes the idea of getting more inequality, of getting a faster return on invested money or of getting still higher incomes for the top of the multinationals and other members of the 1%. The number of billionaires grew impressively during the last economic crisis.

To get real change we should undermine the money and the power of the 1%. Otherwise the 99% continue to be subordinate, inequal and dependent on a small group of super-rich people who live in a separated part of our world.

About Joost van Steenis

My latest book "How to make Revolution, developing the Fourth People's Power", can be downloaded for free from my site http://members.chello.nl/jsteenis. It contains new ideas how to take the money and power away from the most powerful people, the elite. It strives to get a new society in which not money is the pivotal point of all discussions but the idea that all people have the same status. New action means are introduced to reach this paradigm shift (a revolution) that concentrate on direct actions in the living sphere of the elite.
